Charleston, SC Day 9

So today was our last day on vacation. :( We checked out of the hotel at 11:00am and went into downtown to look around the Farmer's Market. First we needed to eat lunch so we went to Bruegger's Bagels but then I realized we were right next to Mellow Mushroom! Needless to say Karen had bagels and I had pizza yet again. Then we walked over to the Farmer's Market and looked around for about an hour. Then it was time to hit the road.

We got to about St. Augustine when we were hungry for dinner so my southern belle and I stopped off to eat at Cracker Barrel. Yes we did sit in the rockers after dinner. http://twitpic.com/40srd We arrived home at midnight and are going to go unpack. Goodnight.

Charleston, SC Day 8

Well we attempted to wake up early (9:00am) but that didn't work. We ended up waking up at 11:00am and decided to go eat lunch downtown. During our trip we have heard so much about Mellow Mushroom Pizza. That's a pizza place not an actual type of pizza. So off to the Mellow Mushroom for lunch.

When you walk into this place you think you are in the 60's and on a really good trip. It's totally psychedelic, decked out with all sorts of hippie stuff and trippy little mushrooms everywhere. We ordered a medium pepperoni pizza with a side of sauce and ranch, to dip our crust in. The pizza came out pretty quick and was amazing!! http://twitpic.com/3xzwa This was the best pizza I ever had. YES, even better then Cici's, but not by much. Karen didn't think so though. She just thought it was ok. Oh well, they don't have a Mellow Mushroom in SFLA anyways, plus, Cici's is cheaper.

After lunch we walked around market street, where they have a bunch of crafty shops and stands. I bought a really cool 7 piece photograph that spells out DORFMAN using different photographs of places around Charleston that is in the form of letters. We also drove to Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms and took some pictures of the fire trucks and police cars. http://twitpic.com/3y0w4 Sullivan's Island is where they brought all the slaves to be held before they were purchased. Here they were examined and made sure they were free of disease. After that sad piece of history we went back to the hotel and took a nap.

For dinner I tried to get Karen to go back to Mellow Mushroom. She didn't buy it, so we ended up going to Southend Brewery and Smokehouse. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=cGq I got pasta with chicken and Karen ordered ribs. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=cGB She did not like them. After dinner we did a ghost tour of the old city jail. They used the jail for over 160 years up until 1930. The jail never had running water or electricity. They say its haunted. If you believe that stuff good for you. It's probably because you ate too many "Mellow Mushrooms" back in the day. Speaking of Mellow Mushrooms, did I mention how good their pizza was? I mean just look at it one more time. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=bPq O back to the jail, here it is. http://twitpic.com/3y0f3

The jail tour was ok. I think I am done with ghost tours for a while. They get kind of boring. They should have people jump out at you or something to make it more scary. Guess I just have to wait for Halloscream at Busch Gardens this year for that. After the tour we went back to the hotel room and played "bloody mary, bloody mary, bloody mary, bloody mary, bloody...................

Charleston, SC Day 7

Today we woke up earlier then the other days (10:00am) so we could get an early start and get a lot done. We started off by having the breakfast of champions, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. http://twitpic.com/3vgtl The light was on which means the doughnuts were fresh and still hot! We each ended up getting 2 doughnuts and milk for breakfast, then hit the road.

It was about a 20 mile drive east along the Ashley River to an area where all the plantations are. We stopped first at Drayton Hall which was built around 1735. http://twitpic.com/3verh The grounds were kept so nice and everything looked perfect. The grounds used to be rice fields attended to by the hundreds of slaves that lived on the plantation. We did the guided tour and then walked around a bit.

Next we went to Middleton Place. Also built in the early 1700's. This plantation is located on 6400 acres, most of which are beautiful gardens. http://twitpic.com/3vezl There were sheep grazing in the field, which we were able to pet. One almost attacked Karen! Next we went on a carriage tour around the grounds. The tour was ok, nothing spectacular, but relaxing.

After the 2 houses and all the walking we did we were really tired. We decided to go back to the hotel to rest before dinner. On the way back we drove thru a cute little town called Summerville. It looked like they had a little downtown area with a few shops, but nothing was open because it was after 5:00pm.

We rested at the hotel till about 7 and then went to downtown Charleston for dinner. Karen had been craving crab legs so we ate at The Crab Shack. Yummy!!!! Not.....ya'll know how much i hate seafood (notice the ya'll? It's the southern rubbing off on me) I ate a hamburger, but here is Karen's dinner. http://twitpic.com/3vjho Ewww how can anyone eat that? It doesn't even look appetizing. I don't even know how people figured out they could eat it! Anyways, It's ok because Karen said they were so sweet and amazing.

After dinner we ended up at Wet Willie's.......again. I think this is the 3rd or 4th time this trip we went there. Of course I got my favorite drink, a Pina Colada. Maybe I'm turning into a drunk? No, I only had one. Then we walked around for a bit and came back to the hotel. Now it's time for bed. Karen is already sleeping and I'm about to go to sleep too. Goodnight Ya'll......

Savannah, GA/Charleston, SC Day 6

We woke up today in Savannah and checked out of our hotel around noon. We were starving so we went into downtown Savannah for a quick bite to eat before hitting the road.

Karen had been craving Sweet Melissa's Pizza again so we stopped in for a slice. After lunch we hit the road for a 2 hour drive north to Charleston. I think mapquest sent us the back way because we got off I-95 and passed thru some pretty small towns. It was really cool though to see the small town country living.

We arrived in Charleston around 3 and checked into the Best Western hotel right in downtown. Our room is on the 7th floor! The view is pretty good from our balcony. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=8ym The room was smaller but still very nice and the king size bed was nice. It looked like it was recently remodeled.

We unloaded everything and hit downtown. The main tourist area has tons of high-end shops. Karen was in heaven. We walked around for a good 3 hours, looking at the stores and taking photographs along the way. We also visited the city pier which was really nice. We sat in a swinging chair on the pier and Karen ate her candy apple. Along the way we saw a light pole with all these funny colored things on them. It turned out to be chewing gum that people have stuck on the pole over the years. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=8Nm

For dinner we ate at Tsunami Sushi, which had really good food. Karen got the red dragon roll and the crunchy charleston roll. Karen says both were amazing. I had the chicken terryaki which was also very good. http://mypict.me/show.php?id=90n

After dinner we walked around for about 30 minutes and then headed back to the car. We are going to try to get to bed a little earlier tonight so we can get an early start.
